Item Details
Description

Revolutionary War date document, a handwritten receipt signed, “Elijah Murray”, Southampton, August 26, 1777. In full, “Received of Benjamin Clap the Sum of one Hundred and Sixty Pounds Sixteen Shillings Three Pence two farthings Lawfull money it Being the whole of Capt Seth Murrays wages for him and his Company for thirty-nine days in the Services of the United States and in the Regiment of Jonathan Clap”. The document originates from a group of papers related to Major Jonathan Clapp.

The sheet measures 6.5 x 5”. Slight irregular areas of toning, and flattened folds, otherwise in fine condition.

Jonathan Clapp (1713-1782) was a major in the Revolutionary War who signed up to serve at the age of 63, under Colonel Seth Pomeroy. The service must have been too strenuous for him because he resigned a year later due to his age, just before the Battle of Bennington. His son Benjamin, himself almost 40 years old, was also in the army as a quartermaster, but Jonathan called upon him to quit as well, telling him he needed Benjamin home to take care of him.
