Extremely scarce map of Connecticut, M. Carey 1814
Item Details
Description
“Connecticut from the Best Authorities” delineated and engraved by Amos Doolittle. This map comes from an extremely scarce 1816 edition of Carey’s General Atlas, the same map that was in his 1814 edition. Early Carey state maps are exceedingly elusive and don’t appear on the market very often. The 1814 Carey General Atlas was the first American atlas to employ the use of standard hand coloring. While hand coloring does occur on some earlier Carey maps, it is considered rare. Shows the entire top coastline of Long Island. Shows location of Dickswells Cave just northwest of New Haven. Known today as Judges Cave, this rock feature is where two of the judges who condemned King Charles I hid out for several months to escape English authorities pursuing them. Nice cartouche on this map. Some offsetting in a few spots. 11.75 x 14.5
