Description
Set of three Buddhas; Southeast Asia, 18th-19th century.
Bronze in bronze and gilded bronze.
Measurements: 14.5 x 8.5 x 6 cm (largest); 10 x 6 x 2 cm (smallest).
Lot made up of three bronze sculptures, which have different dimensions and characteristics despite the fact that they all represent the figure of Buddha. In all three, he appears seated, but the hand gestures vary from one to another, as do the headdress and ornamentation that accompany the representation of the body. This suggests that each probably corresponds to a particular school, as well as representing different moments in the life of the Buddha.
Buddha reached the highest evolutionary perfection, turning suffering into happiness for all living beings. Born around 560 BC, his father was a raja who ruled the north-eastern province of India. At the age of 29, the young prince gave up his life of luxury, as he felt compelled to purify his body and turn it into an instrument of the mind by ridding it of earthly temptations. Here his head is crowned with a headdress depicting the Buddha representing infinite wisdom.
