Early 20th C. Chinese Wooden Buddha Head
Item Details
Description
**First Time At Auction**

East Asia, China, Late Qing Dynasty to early Republic period, ca. 1900 to 1925 CE. This is a large carved wood Buddha head from an important transitional period in Chinese history. The visage is serene, with downcast eyes, a sloped nose, full lips parted into a slight smile, rounded cheeks, and a wide forehead. The arched brow line displays painted eyebrows, and the large ears have drooping ear lobes beneath, a reminder of the Prince Siddhartha's previous wealth. A stylized coiffure is colored in hues of blue and white, with each layer displaying a five-petaled flower in a deep-red color. The wide base is able to support the large head above, and the entire bust has a ground of light-brown pigment. Size: 9.5" W x 15.5" H (24.1 cm x 39.4 cm).

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
