LARGE GILT BRONZE BUDDHA NAGESHVARA RAJA
Item Details
Description
Dimensions: 25-1/2" H

Extraordinary, Large 18th C. Chinese Tibetan Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1912) Gilt Bronze Bodhisattvas Buddha figure of Nageshvara Raja, also known as Nagaraja, the Enlightened One, King of Nagas. There are three primary purposes for practicing this meditational form of Nageshvara. Appearing in the classic form of a renounced one, a nirmanakaya buddha, in the aspect of a monk, Nagaraja has one face and two hands. He holds the two hands at the heart in a special gesture. Held at the heart and joined in the gesture which prevents lower rebirths the index fingers of the two hands are pointed upward and touching while the remaining fingers are entwined. Beautiful, at peace, adorned with blue-black tufts of hair and wears the traditional patched saffron robes of a monk. Seated in vajra posture above a moon disc and lotus throne. The lotus is the sacred Buddhists flower and it symbolizes truth, fertility, and purity. The Bronze is in immaculate condition with minimal marring of the surface. Underside with incised quatrefoil flora-form petal visvavajra surrounding the centralized DaiJi. From private collection of Louis Stephen Jarret & Witney of Oxford Shire, England, UK.
Same provenance private collection of Louis Stephen Jarret & Witney offered at auction catalog listing from Lot-255 through Lot-271.
