LARGE QING GILT BRONZE INLAID VIRUPA BUDDHA

Description
A Large Chinese Tibetan gilt bronze and stones inlaid Buddha figure of Virupa, Yogeshwara, Ugly One, Lord of Yoga. Seated upon a deer-skin and raised on an intricate lotus crown pedestal. With a body corpulent and thick limbed, his face looks upward with large glaring eyes, the black pupils surrounded by white circles. The left hand is raised to the sky in a wrathful gesture with the index finger pointed in an accusatory manner, the palm red and marked with a golden Dharma wheel. Behind, the left hand placed on the moon disc seat supports the gently leaning torso. The crown of the head is adorned with various flowers and ribbons. Large circular bone earrings decorate the ears along with gold and jewel necklaces, bracelets and anklets. A loincloth is worn about the waist. In a relaxed posture with the legs loosely crossed, the soles of the feet marked with Dharma wheels, he sits atop a deerskin, moon disc and lotus blossom.The facial features and flowing hair are painted in a colorful fashion with his entire body adorned with semi-precious stones ornamentations. Extensive trace of gilt remain on surface, with hints of blue pigments on hair.Underside with incised quatrefoil flora-form petal visvavajra surrounding the centralized DaiJi.Virupa, Yogeshwara, Ugly One, Lord of Yoga, foremost in magical attainments, from the famous group of Eighty-four Mahasiddhas of India, prominent lineage teacher for the Tantric meditational systems of Hevajra, Vajrayogini, Rakta Yamari, Rakta Jambhala and others.
"Reversing the Ganga and subduing the evil king; while holding the sun - drinking the liquor of the entire country, without being drunk; completely shattering the Linga and subduing the Chandali; to the renowned Lord of Power, I bow my head." (Sakya liturgical verse).
